Author Visits
To inspire Head students with a love for reading, the PTA Celebrate Reading Committee sponsors an annual author visit. Along with motivating students to read, interacting with a published author provides them with tips on how to improve their own writing. Students also learn lots about the publishing process during an author’s visit.
Awards Program
The P.R.I.D.E. Award reflects all grades, K-5. Classroom teachers chose students who demonstrate improvement during the grading period. The Mustang Manners Award reflects all grades, K-5. Classroom teachers chose students who demonstrate being ready, responsible, and respectful during the grading period. The Principal's Honor Roll - All A's with E's and S's - reflects grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th for the grading period.
Choral Performances
There are several opportunities for students to participate in musical performances during their years at R. D. Head. Chorus, dancers, soloists as well as instrumentalists add "spice" to any program whether it is the Holiday show, the Valentine Luncheon, a spring show or the other special events that often occur during the school year.
Colonial Day
Colonial Day is a cultural arts program for 4th graders held in early May. Guests from Atlanta will provide the children with a hands-on experience of the culture during the Colonial period. The children will be able to participate in different facets of life such as the dress of the time, dance, the calvary, and the weapons and tools of the era.
Headline News
Each morning the day’s announcements are broadcast live to every classroom in a news show format. The 4-person news crew is made up of 5th graders, and includes 2 anchors, a mixer operator, and a camera operator. Every 5th grader at Head has the privilege of working on a news crew for one week.
Movie Night
The Staff Relay for Life Team sponsors a Movie Night each year on the first Friday in December. Tickets are sold at school the week of the event. Students are able to enjoy a full-length movie, cartoons and pizza. R. D. Head staff members supervise this fun evening with the students. All proceeds go toward the team's fundraising efforts for the American Cancer Society.
Reading Recognitions
One outstanding reader from each 2nd-5th grade class is chosen by their teacher and recognized monthly on Headline News. Students appear in person on the show and are introduced and congratulated by the Media Specialist. Entire classes are also recognized on a monthly basis. Each month the 2nd-5th grade class that earned the most Accelerated Reader points receives a bag of Airheads for every student. The class whose point total was the most improved for the month also receives Airheads. This reading recognition program is sponsored by PTA.
Safety Patrols
Exemplary fifth grade students at R.D. Head are eligible to become safety patrols. Once a month, each 5th grade teacher chooses two students who will represent their class for the month. Students who are interested should let their teachers know. Safety patrol duties consist of the raising and lowering of the American and Georgia Flags, and helping students in and out of cars and buses. There are two shifts, the morning and the afternoon. Students who have morning duty should report at 8:15.
Six Flags Reading Clubs
Each year R.D. Head students have the opportunity to earn a free ticket to Six Flags by participating in the Six Flags Reading Club! To earn their tickets, students must do six hours of recreational reading, record what they have read, and return their reading logs to their teachers. The program is coordinated by the media specialist, and runs from January through February.
Science Club
Young Scientists meet once a month after school from 3:30 until 4:30. Students in grades two through five are invited to attend. Our club is sponsored by PTA, so there is no cost for joining. Activity examples include making goo, building molecules with gum drops and toothpicks, collecting leaves from the nature trail, pressing them and making a leaf journal, and building rockets that actually fly. We take a Saturday field trip each year. All you need to do to join the Young Scientists’ Club is bring a permission note from your parents on the day of the meeting. Your parents will need to pick you up at school at 4:30. Watch for the calendar of meeting dates in your teacher’s weekly newsletter or look in the PTA calendar each month. For more information, see Mrs. Caldwell in the FOCUS room.
Skate Night
Skate Night is part of PTA's Parent and Family Committee. PTA sponsors several Skate Nights during the school year from 6:00-8:15 pm at a local skating rink. It is a fun activity for families to share together.
Spelling Bee
In December of each year, R.D. Head holds the annual spelling bee for grades 4 and 5.  Students compete in classroom spelling bees to represent their homeroom at this event.  The winner proceeds to the Gwinnett County spelling bee in February.  Winners at the county bee compete for the district and perhaps even state title for an opportunity to participate in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
Strategy Club for 4th and 5th Grade FOCUS Students
The strategy club fosters critical thinking and problem solving in a fun way through a game format. Students in fourth and fifth grade FOCUS learn games such as Othello, Cribbage, Set, and Backgammon that challenge their strategic thinking and allow them to compete with each other. This club helps students develop an awareness of different problem solving approaches as they learn to apply appropriate thinking skills to a game so they may investigate and try out their own thinking strategies to win.
Student Council
The purpose of student council is to provide an opportunity for some of our students (K-5) to function as responsible leaders. From these responsible leaders, all students will be able to observe appropriate leadership. Student council is made up of a president, vice-president, and historian from the fifth grade, a secretary from the fourth grade, and representatives from all grade levels including special education. For more information, contact Jessica Smith or Bonnie Pruitt, student council sponsors.
Veteran's Day Program
Every Veteran's Day R. D. Head's third grade takes a moment to honor and recognize the men and women who have served our county in uniform. During our program, we sing patriotic songs and listen to history of the four armed services. We conclude our program by having our students present a medal and a certificate to our service men and women.
Yearbook

The R. D. Head Yearbook is an annual PTA sponsored publication featuring students and events from the current school year.  The cover is selected from a design contest in which 5th grade students participate.  Annual sales are in late October, with delivery of the yearbooks toward the last week of school. Parents are welcome to donate photos taken at school for consideration in the yearbook.  For further information please contact the yearbook committee.  Contact information is located in the student calendar.
